I honestly didn't feel like the story worked. At one point in The Dark Tower series King has his characters discuss how a story can be more than one thing, like a stew is a marriage of flavors. I felt like The Golden Compass was a stew someone cooked but it ended up tasting like crap. I felt like he was trying a lot of stuff and a lot of it didn't work.
