I think this excellent book should come with a warning sticker that says "This is literary fiction not popular historical fiction, and contains magical realism and a complicated plot line". Do not read this if you want the facts of the Underground Railroad but if you want the "feeling" of slavery and escape you could find nothing better. It's sad, infuriating, and ultimately triumphant. Whitehead has crafted an incredibly moving perspective in the protagonist Cora. This book feels important to read, especially for anyone who may fall prey to the presumption that slavery is something America has healed from.

I liked the book but I had a hard time suspending reality to love it. Having the Underground Railroad be a literal rather than just a figurative railroad disturbed me. I saw my first station when I was 10 at Robert Todd Lincoln’s summer home in Vermont. I also live near what was an active part today. I also could not suspend reality with South Carolina.
