This is a good book for upper Key Stage 2 children and succesfully and almost playfully uses childhood imaginative magical scenes to explore issues of anxiety, grief and family. It struck me as both quirky and original; the use of rhyme was a nice touch and the characteristics of the toys were funny but real. I was surprised to see this title on the Carnegie shortlist though, as the intended audience seemed (to me at least) to be so much younger than the intended readers of previous winning titl ...more

One of the best books I have read this year. Original and clever. A modern day take on Alice in Wonderland. Brilliant.
