Perfect to pair this gripping nonfiction account of real samurai with the fantasy historical novel Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit by Nahoko Uehashi featuring a female samurai. Loved the backup material in Turner's book -- maps, glossary, pronunciation guides, timelines, extensive endnotes, etc. On her website, the author also has a PDF discussion guide to download. ...more

This is a fine example of history written in the form of a story that will keep students riveted to the bloody wars that took place in Japan in the 1180s. Minamoto Yoshitsune comes alive as a character that readers will root for even though his fate will be guessed by most readers by the time it is realized. The author throws in just enough current day lingo to keep kids engaged in the story. Recommended for readers who like history, war, battles, and action/adventure.
