I wish I could give 10 stars to this book.

Well, first of all, let me say that as always with this series this book was an emotional rollercoaster, the perfect ending for an outstanding series.

I don't want to write a summary of the story, because frankly there are many people who can do it much better than me.

All I have to say about Mockingjay, is that it was amazing, heartbreaking, painful, but above all things, beautiful, an incredibly sad but sweet story about all the very things that makes us ...more

When I got done with this book. I didn't know if I hated this book or loved it.
I read this book very slowly. This is because I knew it was going to be sad and it was the last installment. I thought I would break and breeze through it. But quite frankly, it wasn't hard to take it slow. I just didn't want to read it, and here's why:

Perfect. All I have to say.
I just finished it about 10 minutes ago, so I will edit this review later to say some more thoughts.
It's not for everyone, and I can see why other people don't like it, but in my view, it's just perfect.

Okay, now I'll try to write a real review. But this is going to be hard...
All right...I'll start with what I didn't like.

1. Gale. His character gets kind of ripped off in Mocki Perfect. All I have to say.
I just finished it about 10 minutes ago, so I will edit this review later to say some more thoughts.
It's not for everyone, and I can see why other people don't like it, but in my view, it's just perfect.

Okay, now I'll try to write a real review. But this is going to be hard...
All right...I'll start with what I didn't like.

1. Gale. His character gets kind of ripped off in Mockingjay. Yes, he gets more face time, and I have a sense of what drives him (what he went through with District 12...gotta suck), but I don't really have any idea why he "loves" Katniss, if indeed he does at all. He's accepting of the fact that Katniss won't be able to love him while Peeta is being held by the Capitol, but that in itself is out of touch with what little we know of his character. Isn't he supposed to be the one driven by "fire", as Katniss herself puts it? Shouldn't he put up more of a fight for Katniss? And towards the end...he gets a "fancy job" up in District 2, and...we never hear from him again. I feel like he should have been given more of a chance.

2. Well...actually, that was all I really disliked about it. Although...actually, one quick question: Does anyone know Katniss's mother's name? Do we ever find out? I feel like she should have gotten a name...

Things I like (and feel I must defend).

1. Katniss. Okay, people have been complaining about Katniss in this book; that she had no strength or fire. I've gotta disagree on that. She is fighting just as hard in this book as she fought in Hunger Games and Catching Fire. She's just fighting in a different way--towards a different goal. In The Hunger Games, it was for survival and to protect her family in the Games. In Catching Fire, it was the same--just a little more was at stake. In Mockingjay, she's fighting for Peeta. And for herself, I think. She just wants to know who to fight for, and I think Collins overlooked that this mental struggle would leave room for little else, like bombing and shooting things, which other people seem to take as Katniss's strength. I think the mental struggle in this book is just as important as shooting other people was in the first two books. It's a mind vs. body thing--we all know Katniss can kick ass at archery etc. But we don't know how she puts up with the opposite kind of pressure--the pressure from the rebels and from Peeta's instabilities. And no, she doesn't handle it all that well, but hey. Collins made her human, not some kind of robot. She's allowed to crack a bit, even if we all get frustrated with her sometimes.

I don't know if this makes any sense--I'm scared to reread it, because I think I might have contradicted myself or repeated myself...sorry, guys, bear with me.

2. Everything else. I just really liked this book. Yes, Gale didn't get a fair chance--but whatever, I was for Peeta anyways. I think Collins outdid herself on this one. The writing is a bit choppy at points. And Collins couldn't have satisfied everyone. I think this was about as good as a conclusion as she could have gotten out of such a monumental series. ...more

I reread Wikipedia plot summaries of the previous two books to refresh my memory a day or two before I read this. I read this on Sunday in about an 8-/9-hour stretch. My thoughts follow...

Compared to the previous two books, the pacing is not as good, and the same goes for most other aspects of the book. Collins attempts to push the characters toward a distinct change in personality - Gale is much "rougher" and more war-ready (far more so than Katniss herself, who's actually seen fighting, unlike I reread Wikipedia plot summaries of the previous two books to refresh my memory a day or two before I read this. Compared to the previous two books, the pacing is not as good, and the same goes for most other aspects of the book. Collins attempts to push the characters toward a distinct change in personality - Gale is much "rougher" and more war-ready (far more so than Katniss herself, who's actually seen fighting, unlike him), and as for Peeta, there's an actual believable reason why his character changes. Katniss, for her part, spends at least half the book moping or wallowing in self-doubt (even when she's on a mission) - which, given her double survival of the Hunger Games, doesn't really make all that much sense. I'd like to take a second to compare it to the Mass Effect trilogy - while Shepard's levels of awesomeness grew higher and higher in each instance of the series, Katniss grew more awesome in the second book but suddenly got kind of sucky in the third (not so much physically as emotionally/psychologically).

But even more than this, what disappointed me was the ending. To avoid spoilers, let's just say Collins took what should have been an awesome showdown with her and the unexpected "villain" of sorts - which should have taken several chapters more, and built Katniss's awesomeness up again - and, well, sort of ruined it. There were definitely parts I liked about the twists Collins introduced - but the problem lay in the way she introduced them. Also, she should not be moping around again shortly before the last events of the book. That is a terrible way to end.

(If people want to actually discuss the ending in a spoilerific manner somewhere else (aka not in the review section), let me know.)

Overall, the universe from the previous two books held up well enough, but it seemed to sort of stagnate a bit. Nothing really happens until towards the very end, and that isn't executed well enough. I was informed by others (on Reddit) who'd read it already that they found it disappointing compared to the earlier books; I noted the pacing issues and such as I went along, but it wasn't until I'd finished 3/4ths of the book and Katniss had done very little that I got worried. And then the ending, of course. I'd give the book maybe 2.75 stars. ...more

AMAZING!!! Suzanne Collins does not disappoint in this final installment of this trilogy. She keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book. The plot points are *not* predictable, and you may think you know what is about to happen but you don't. This is a fantastic series for both adults and children that I cannot recommend enough.
