I would recommend this book to pretty much everyone. At the heart of Gawande's thesis is that breakthroughs in medicine are rarely achieved by merit alone; diligence and an ability to learn from failure are equally important. To probe the ambiguities of failure feels downright novel in these times (if I can soapbox for a second), and this surgeon's belief that those who make a science of performance--i.e., take the ego out of their work--are the top 1% of their jobs is pretty persuasive. ...more
