Truly excellent book that really places you in occupied France and at the hands of the Gestapo.
I laughed and I cried (mainly the latter). I knew that things were going to end badly - but what a journey.
I'm not sure that I will be encouraging my 10 yr old to read this just yet as it is quite graphic (all entirely within the context of the historical accuracy) and I have to say made me angry all over again at what happened in this period.

This book is about two women in WWII. One is a pilot, one is a spy, and they get shot down in their ferry plane in Nazi-occupied France. The first half of the book is told from the spy’s point-of-view. The second, from the pilot’s. That is all I will tell you. This book is full of twists and turns, and you second-guess yourself constantly trying to figure out everything that could potentially happen. But I’m not going to talk about that either.

I love this book. I will always love this book. It's beautiful and heart breaking and everyone should read it. I think this was my fourth reread and it'd been a while, so everything felt fresh - the intrigue, piecing the clues together, the gorgeous friendship at its heart, the horror, the flashes of humour despite the horror. And then some things were utterly familiar because some of the writing is so lovely you just don't forget it. I had forgotten how local it is to me, though, with Stockport

Holy crap this book is good. I want you to believe me, and to read this book immediately without me telling you a damn thing about it. Just trust me. I want everyone I know to read it, so that I can talk to everyone about it.
I wrote a review about it here.
I didn't give anything away there either. But I'm hoping you'll be intrigued enough to pick up a copy.

I cannot remember the last time that I finished a book and immediately started re-reading it. This is an amazing book-great characters, great setting, twists & turns and lots of "feels"! You also have to pay attention because this is not a quick, single layer read. I can't wait for "Rose Under Fire" by Elizabeth Wein (Sep 10, 2013).

This very touching YA novel features two improbably heroic young Englishwomen contributing to the war effort by undertaking dangerous missions to the Continent in the dark days of WWII. Though firmly focused on her protagonists and their hair-raising adventures, Wein works on a very large canvas--she depicts covert operations in Occupied France, the fractured allegiances of the Nazi administrative apparatus, the gray area occupied by "unofficial" prisoners-of-war, and the tragic ironies of attem
