Cool Side of the Pillow in Mostly Sapphic

I really wanted to like this. I'm a sucker for small towns and meddling but good intentioned family/neighbours and those who have a quirky bent. I'm also a sucker for paranormal and a 'lost love' storyline with a 'new love' being found after loss. Throw in the fact there was a parrot character, you would think this hit the "Bingo" for me. But sadly it just didn't deliver.

I struggled just to slog through to 46% of the book, and by that point STILL the two mains hadn't spent any quality time with I really wanted to like this. We know Clara is a mortician for her family's business but is the one in charge. She sees dead people. Talks to them even. Her wife has died about 4 years ago, but at this point in the book I still don't know how. All we know is Clara has been waiting to hear from her beyond the grave, since she's been able to talk to most everyone else in their passing - but she hasn't heard a peep from her and this pains her. She's depressed and struggling, closed off, which is to be expected. Her Aunt is trying to set her up with a friends niece.

Bebe is one writer in a slew for a soap opera, she's besties with one of the stars and many other shameless, shallow starlet types. She doesn't fit in, at all - yet she's still an active part of this lifestyle. It made no sense, in my mind. I did not like the attitude of her friends in any way, and while she was portrayed as lovable, clumsy and very caring - the fact she would have these incredibly rude, mean spirited 'friends' around her did not make her look good in any way. I just failed to understand it.

Clara and Bebe apparently know each other from growing up in the same area, (plus their aunts and other relatives being good friends). Clara remembers her as a nickname 'brick' that was often accident prone. It's stated many times Bebe is fuller figured, and Clara is more lean. Clara constantly notices how attractive Bebe is, and vice versa. But insists she doesn't need or want any romantic entanglements.

Clara and Bebe keep crossing paths, but not sharing anything even basic - and Clara keeps ogling Bebe - especially when she walks around in her negligee as the wind whips her hair into a rose bush - meaning she gets "Stuck" as the winds continues to flip her nightie up showing her curvy ass, and "titan triangle" to Clara who goes into heat immediately at the sight.... yeah I basically wanted to throw up at that point and so I stopped reading.

Shelves: lendable, f-f-romance-and-fiction

I've read all of this author's other books available on amazon, and loved them all. So it seemed a given that i'd like this one too, even though the introduction didn't reel me in. The author showed her great skill at character development in this book. Though,the antagonistic chemistry which was hot, didn't lead to anything but a slow, late starting romance.
