5 Stars for Dec. 2018 re-read.
This is my I don't know, third re-read at the least. I first read the online version years ago. I'm adjusting my rating to 5 stars. Historical novels are not my favorite genre but I do enjoy this one and the follow-up stories. ...more

A fantastic book. Great characters and plot. Andy and I discuss it on episode 16 of Cocktail Hour: http://www.cocktailhour.c-spot.net/ar... and Nikki and I review it on C-Spot Reviews: http://reviews.c-spot.net/archives/4746.

Luke Hamilton is a woman living as a man. S/he has just left the army to head down the Oregon Trail with a wagon train and claim the land the territory will give any man… and notice I said "man"... so s/he can begin a horse farm. S/he meets and asks a prostitute named Nora to marry him... her.. oh heck, let’s just stick to the biological. Her. Though I admit I don’t much like calling Luke what she would not call herself.. him.

I honestly don't how many times I have reread this book, but I will never grow tired of it. Luke and Nora are such beautifully written characters that they truly exist and hold space in my heart. They are both damaged, hurting and afraid; simply trying to exist in peace. Their growth, both individually and together, is so absolutely extraordinary and inspiring. The journey west absorbing and exciting and tense.

I really loved this story which is unusually because I’m not a huge fan of historical era type stories, but I loved the characters Luke and Nora and I find myself wanting to re-read the story. I can count on one hand the stories I’ve wanted to read again.
The story takes place in the 1850’s and Luke is a woman passing as a man in part because the options for a single woman are get married and essentially be considered property or be a prostitute.

I loved this book. Reading about their journey to oregon really made me think about how hard settlers trips to the West had to be. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the places the wagon train stopped. I was really surprised at how long Luke was able to keep her secret from Nora. I can't wait to read the next books in the series. I'm looking forward to reading more about Luke, Nora and their kids.
