As anticipated, this was not an easy read, due to the 'issues' I had already encountered when reading the first chapter in advance. Many, many (weird) names to keep straight (I couldn't), and many, many Old English words... only a few have made it into my brain.

But! There was never a point at which I considered quitting, the story did draw me in (even if my reading 'speed' doesn't reflect this). Beautiful prose, as I expected, that describes place and time wonderfully. Hild is a wonderful charac ...more

Whilst this is an excellent read, I feel publishers could be doing much more with ebooks to make content like glossaries, family trees, or maps more accessible to readers. It is a right PITA to look up words in the glossary on a kindle, and I ended up loading the book on to my phone, too, so that I could easily check the map or the dictionary. C'mon ebook publishers -- you can do better! ...more
