Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell was an amazingly unique and enjoyable book. The characters were well developed as was the history surround the story. The book was very long and it took a while to get through it but it was worth all of the history and development. Too often stories short change development. I would highly recommend this book for people who love fantasy and people who also love the social interactions of novels by authors like Jane Austen.

A delightful, funny, meaty book to really savour and get lost in for weeks. A real treat for 19th century lit and history nerds (Lord Byron and the Duke of Wellington make cameos!). The book is tremendously English (like much of the English experience, it's a study in people being polite while everything goes bonkers) but it has a kight voice with a good sense of humor about itself. I wouldn't have minded spending another 400 pages in this world, so I'm glad to hear Clarke's working on a sequel! ...more
