I read a lot of reviews of this book that said it was great. But it's really long and it sounds boring, at least to me, so it sat on my shelf for a really long time before I finally gave it a try.
Surprise! It's really good. Yes, it's long. And I think it takes maybe 40 or 50 pages to get going, but once you're there, it doesn't really matter how long it is. It's one of those books that you enjoy reading so much that finishing it isn't really the goal.

It took me months to listen to this book and while there were moments of tedium (the Napoleonic wars are not my cuppa) I loved every minute of it, footnotes and all. The narrative structure reminded me simultaneously of the Jack Tales and of Victorian serial novels -- the focus shifted from character to character per chapter but in a centralized way that felt incredibly intimate without losing focus.
