This book got better the further I got into it. It was recommended to me by one of my geek friends. And my geeky brother read it and enjoyed it - so it came w/ some good geek cred. From glancing at other reviews, I expected the 80's references to be a little heavy handed. Which they were. Really heavy handed in the beginning. Every sentence seemed to have a shiny "80's reference" flag waving as well as a "wink" after each period.

I really want to put this on my 'yaish' bookshelf because so much of this book fits:
-dystopia, world falling apart
-focus on the love affair, with its tragic middle part where they get ripped apart
-teenage protagonist who has some real special skills
On the other hand, I also can't imagine anyone under 30 reading this book because almost every other sentence is a reference to something from the 80s. Is there such a category as YA-nostalgia--ya-like books for people who are primarily interested in ...more

This book made me feel all warm inside. A grand coming-of-age hero's quest adventure in the vein of 80's genre movies, Ready Player One is a fresh twist on all those stories I loved as a teenager, referencing a whole lot of the geeky things I liked and a whole lot of things I only heard about. Sure, it's a bit of a comfort-blanket, but it fulfills that purpose in spades, throwing in some romance, a Jobs/Woz-like backstory, a discussion of reality vs. virtual reality and, finally, a heartwarming
