I know a lot of people didn't like this book for various reasons, but "I don't know the history and the author should have explained it to me" is completely invalid, imo. Especially in the modern age of Wikipedia. It didn't feel the same as the other two books of hers I've read, and that is fine. I also wouldn't compare this to Cathrynne Valente's amazing Deathless, because it's apples and oranges. I mean, unless you want to say there's no room for coming of age stories about young American men
