The narrative kind of falls apart by the end (no idea what's going on in the climax), but until then this book is a total blast. Love the ideas and the inventiveness. And it's ingenious to present this new universe in a detective/amnesia story -- a great way to introduce unfamiliar concepts.

3.5 stars. When I started to read this book I had a hard time accepting that I wasn't supposed to understand everything. And that is key. You are in the same boat as Jean le Flambeur, you have made yourself forget, or whatever. This is a puzzle and the pieces are everywhere. The characters were great. It was creamy and visual and so very very clever. But also dense and hardcore. And the worldbuilding was ineffable.
