There was much to admire in this book. I loved the story of two young outsiders - one dabbling in magic while the other gravitates towards science and how they struggled to belong. I loved the ambition of trying to bring the two worlds of science and magic together and in having the balls to then move the story to our two protagonist's early adulthood...but unfortunately, that's where this book changed to me from a sure 4 or 5 star rating to a respectable but not great 3 stars. Very imaginative and unique world building, but seemed a little bogged down by pacing and characterization issues. To me at least, the tone felt a little uneven? Sometimes things were very jokey and played for laughs, and sometimes I felt like I was supposed to take things very seriously. Overall an enjoyable read, I liked the blend of sci-fi and fantasy and the magic system was fascinating. A satisfying ending and definitely a few laugh out loud moments.

You know how bookstores have a section called "Sci-Fi/Fantasy" even though those two genres aren't really alike? That way, when you browse this section, novels like "Robot Death Kaiju Gun Metal Apocalypse" are in the same general area as "Dragon Fairy Wizard Riders of Yyyyyrvrrrnerrrn: Book XXI: The Awakening of the Dreamers of Dawn" despite those books anything little in common except massive page counts? Well, "All the Birds in the Sky" would actually fit in that section.
