Interesting but not entirely successful book. The story mostly takes a broad panoramic view that reads more like the recounting of an ancient legend than a modern character study. But the downside of that approach is that the characters themselves become sketchy and vague (I had a very hard time keeping track of or caring about most of them), and the plot feels like something that is destined to happen rather than an organic development; it’s reading a history rather than a suspenseful story.
