I typically do not like memoirs, but this one reads like fiction- but you know its true because you can't make this stuff up! I grew up poor and we went without a lot of things, but this is a story of neglect and abuse the likes of which will make you ill. But the thing that makes this story so great is that the author got through it. She and her siblings managed to survive and remain a family through situations that would defeat the average person.
