What a great story! I didn't want it to end. The story is set in the 1660's on Manhattan Island, back when the Dutch inhabited it and it was called Nieuw Amsterdam. Jonica Kleiger's father has been banished from the town for various acts of misbehavior, but Jonica is spared the poorhouse by being indentured to the wealthy Van der Voort family.
