Great book!

Wonderful first novel. I am expecting many more great things to come from this author. At times it read a lot like the fables from my childhood, like the lion and the mouse. This book was filled with many morals whether the author intended them to be there I am not sure. There was just enough fantasy to keep me reading mixed in with a history lesson of New York City and it's many landmarks.

A slow burn (pardon the pun) relationship between a golem and a jinni. I kept imagining where the story might take us but ended up surprised anyway. It is such an interesting and different fantasy genre and I enjoyed the different-ness of it. It took me so long to read, not that I lost interest but it didn't catch me at first and I didn't read with any urgency. As I passed the halfway point, I got excited about the characters and seeing how their story would turn out. Highly enjoyable!

I was thrilled with the sample for this book. It hooked me from the beginning, had a lovely, literary voice, and the characters seemed to come to life before me. Unfortunately, that same literary quality that I loved so much made the book fall apart for me in the later chapters. I love the writing in this novel. The way the world is imagined, the cultural detail. A sweet, if unconventional, love story. This book was recommended to me by a number of friends and co-workers. I gladly pass that recommendation on.
