Whoa. I actually liked this one!

It's a YA/somewhat dystopian/fantasy/science fiction novel that does feel a little like Hunger Games, but I also felt a little X-Men/Braveheart/Gladiator vibe in it.

In true YA fashion, it's of course the first book in what I assume will be a trilogy (what is getting REALLY ANNOYING.. is it just me???). The heroine in this novel, Mare, lives in a world of poverty and anquish as a Red, while the elite and powerful are Silvers (named this way by the color of their b

Entertaining and action packed YA novel. As other reviewers have mentioned, this book has lots of similarities to other dystopian novels: Divergent, The Selection, Hunger Games, and The Maze Runner to name a few. It was a slow start but the end was exciting and twisty. Will be interesting to see how this imaginative dystopian world plays out on the big screen. 3.5★s

I can't say that I am a fan of the dystopia genre but I am a fan of Girl Power/Underdog stories. This book took me on a ride that all eras of history, whether made up or real, have battled. Believing you are better than someone else because of your color or skin, religion, status in society or color of blood is a dangerous mind set to have. I can say this series has me hooked. ...more

I enjoyed this book; it was action-packed and thrilling. But I feel as though the writing was a little choppy. Maybe Victoria needed to develop the characters a little more than how they are presented. I understand this is from Mare's perspective but while reading this novel, I was a little confused by the story line. I think it was starting to develop, but the writing hindered that aspect. ...more

2015 Reading Challenge: A book based entirely on its cover.

I feel like this book tried to take elements from a lot of other popular book series' and tried to put them together into one, but it didn't really turn out that well. It wasn't very original, the world building needs some work, and the characters were just not that relatable to me. I'm disappointed in this one.

Great start to the series, I'm a sucker for this YA post-apo genre. Gritty female lead and interesting twists and turns to keep you turning pages. It was solid and entertaining, what more do you want? ...more

Oh I don't like it. Not one bit. It was very interesting and all. But that twist. Why? It should have been obvious. I am going to find a AU Fanfiction just to make me happier about this book. ...more
