Ebook (70%)/Audio (30%): the book was better than the audio.

If you like crime novels, The Dry is for you. Not a fast paced thriller but an engaging mystery told in past and present. One gets to know the characters well. Worth the read.

A fantastic mystery. Something about Harper's prose makes the reading really smooth, and she just had several good lines and metaphors throughout that I had to pause and savor. The drought is its own character in the book, as is the Australian wildlife, and both add an edge of peril to the mystery that makes it an exciting read, despite the setting being a tumbleweeds-blowing-by town. This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I loved the writing style, and I was instantly hooked by both sets of mysteries - the one from 20 years earlier, and the one playing out in real-time. Unfortunately, I found the story a little slow at times, and the flashbacks were more annoying than interesting. I was also pretty disappointed with the way the book wrapped up. Everything seemed a little too coincidental, and then the final chapter seemed to wrap up the loose ends in a neat-and-tidy bow.

While this was a dull-ish read the backstory had a satisfying (though tragic) conclusion. Inexplicably, I’m curious about the next book.

Awful narrator. Had to work much too hard to understand him. Ends of sentences swallowed. Borrowed the hardcover from a friend and finished it. Harper's writing is first-rate. Story is strong.

Spoiler alert: "Luke lied. You lied." Not sure how Gerry Handler would have know this. Would have been understandable had Gretchen said it. . . and a much better story.

3.5 stars rounded down. This was well-written but a little too slow moving for my tastes.
