This remains a terrific series. Flavia is growing up and her father and the Inspector are seeing the ever growing dangers of her doing her own murder investigations. Still, she's easy to love and very clever. In this one she helps an old gypsy woman by letting her park her wagon on her family's property. The night she is there she is attacked and beaten near to death. This leads Flavia to meet the gypsy's granddaughter who is about her own age, but has had a totally different life. Love love this girl and the wonderful writing !!! She brings me back to when i was her age ..... Can't wait to read the 4th installment . Hard to believe a man wrote this fantastic series ..... ...more

Another wonderful one. Flavia is getting "hurt" more often by physically doing her investigating and closer to people who are harmed and even murdered. Flavia is one great liar....but does so in order to continue to investigate and learn. Learned more chemistry, investigative methods, Gypsies, MI6, and other members of Flavia's family. Really good twists in storyline and who the murderer turns out to be. ...more

The third Flavia de Luce novel was as enjoyable as the first and second. The New York Time Book Review quote on the cover of A Red Herring Without Mustard states the novel is “irresistibly appealing” and I agree. I love the main character – endearing and infuriating in turn, I think Flavia would be a charming young lady to know – which to me, just goes to show what an amazing job Alan Bradley has done in creating her.
