I'm not generally a big mystery reader, but heard enough good things about this book to give it a shot. It's cute!
The story revolves around Flavia de Luce, a precocious 11-year old who lives in a small English village in the 1950s. There's some rather familiar set-up: three eccentric daughters and an absentminded, widowed father live in a crumbly old manor house, and devote themselves to all sorts of strange pursuits. Flavia's particular passion is chemistry. It's all a little preposterous and ...more

This one was a unique read. The setting is an English country house in the 1950s. Flavia DeLuce is 11 years old, has two older sisters who enjoy making her life miserable, and a father who is a bit of a recluse as he is wrapped up in his stamp collecting. Flavia's mother died when she was an infant. The servants are most interesting characters as well. Flavia also has a great interest in chemistry and an insatiable curiosity. A stranger ends up dead in their cucumber patch and Flavia is the firs

"The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" takes place in 1950 in the English village of Bishop's Lacey on the Buckshaw estate. Flavia de Luce lives with her widowed father and two older sisters. Flavia is a precocious eleven-year-old with an interest in chemistry, especially poisons, while her father is preoccupied with stamp collecting while his daughters practically raise themselves with a little help from a housekeeper and a gardener. Sister Ophelia is interested in boys while Daphne cares for

It took me a little while to get into this book, but after I did I enjoyed it. The heroine is an 11-year old who is very advanced for her age and a lover of chemistry (which I totally don't get), but she was endearing and the story was well thought out. The author uses a lot of fun vocabulary words and alludes to various works of literature, which I always like--at least when I get it.

Flavia De Luce is an 11 year old Chemistry genius who wars with her older sisters just like in any other family- but when Flavia wants revenge, she injects poison ivy into her sister's lipstick or melts down pearl necklaces for experiments. Without much parental influence, Flavia is left on her own to explore the English countryside and the fascinating world of chemistry.

I absolutely loved Sweetness. The main character of 11 year old Flavia is one of the cleverest, most entertaining characters I have had the pleasure to meet in a mystery book. Flavia is the 11-year-old daughter of a widower in England in the 50s. She loves science and mystery, and is very interested in poisons. She has two sisters who Flavia considers clueless, they are all playing tricks on each other and thinking of ways to "get even". This was a great read as Flavia solves the mystery of the

only rarely do I find my belief in this twelve year old's abilities wavering. She is more like a real child then many fictional characters and the mystery is well and classically plotted

This is a clever and complex mystery with an unforgetable young female sleuth. The beginning of a series that's certain to entertain. Read it and laugh!
