House Rules written by Jodi Picoult was a book about a boy who the whole town thought committed a terrible murder. Jacob Hunt has Asperger’s syndrome and his love is forensic science. When his social skills tutor is mysteriously murdered and he was the last one to be seen with her, he is the prime suspect in the case. The symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome can look a lot like guilt if you are uninformed about the disease. Jacob goes on trial and the truth is finally revealed surprisingly at the end.
This book takes place in a very small town during the winter. The major conflict in this book is finding out if Jacob really committed the murder, if he did why did he, and if he didn’t then who did? Other conflicts include Jacob, his family, his self, and the community around him trying to accept Jacob for who he really is.
I would give the book four and a half stars out of five. I really enjoyed the book and the ending really surprised me which I liked. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read Jodi Picoult books before. It is also a good book if you know anything about Asperger’s syndrome or if you want to learn about it or anyone who likes books with a surprise ending. It was 521 pages.
