“Red midnight” is about two main characters, Santiago who is twelve, and his four-year-old sister, Angelina. These two kids have to run from their village, Dos Vias in Guatemala, to escape from the guerrilla soldiers. These soldiers have burned down their village and killed many innocent people. Santiago's Uncle Ramos has taught him how to sail his cayuco, but Santiago is only a beginner. Santiago starts to sail to the United States with only a little bit of food, a map, and a machete. He runs into some trouble, but he finally makes it to the United States and tells every one of his journey and what had happened to his village in Guatemala.
The conflicts in the story start to build when Santiago feels like he’s all alone sailing to the United States. He feels this way because his little is only four, so she can’t do much and he is stuck trying to survive all of bad storms that come along. He also deals with conflicts between his sister when she becomes angry with him and wants to go home. Angelina doesn’t quite understand the tragedy that has happened in the past few days.
I recommend reading this book because I really liked it. The book can be really sad at times, but it also tells you too not give up in any difficult situation. I gave this book four stars. This book is for anyone in the ages of teenagers to adults. If you like Adventure books this one is for you.
