I am not the target audience for this book - I am sure women love it and I can see why. I picked this up after a trip to Scotland and wanting to read historical fiction about that country. The first part of the book is great - I have often thought there was a story in flipping the "John Carter" story meme where a woman journeys thru a portal into a foreign/strange place and learns how to adapt and survive. This book was ok but I just wasn't overly entertained by it. I also didn't feel the characters. The protagonist, Claire, was likeable enough but I just didn't come to like her as a reader should come to like or at least have compassion for the main character. Even the main love interest Jamie, I didn't love. A reader should love the main love interest or at least be very entertained by them. This was pretty good up until about the halfway point where Claire is beat for her 'disobedience' and soon after, RAPED by the husband we're suppose to love and cherish. Guess what else? The author attempts to justify his actions! UM, NOPE. A complete 180 was done with both Claire and Jamie's personalities and I am done. Disappointing, because this would have been rated a lot higher if it wasn't for this turn of events. ...more
