I really don't know what all the fuss is about. This book left me rather cold both times I read it. Characters are not very likable and I didn't really get that Culture feel...But it's obviously just me. If you want Banks at his best try Matter or Surface Detail.

I’d give 3.5 stars if possible. Many of the characters were not super likable. But it did keep me interested enough that throughout I wanted to see how it ended. The ending was not a surprise and it’s central lesson one I already knew but again worth the read.
This is the first novel of Banks' classic Culture series. The novel is a fast-paced "space opera" which revolves around the Idiran–Culture War and a morally ambiguous protagonist who you route for in some instances but also realize might be on the "wrong side" overall.
