Had to DNF around 1/3 of the way in. The author seems to be aiming at a light-hearted quirky Douglas Adams knock-off, but I thought it was a hot mess. I can see why others like it, but it wasn’t working for me.

Some fun thinking here, but the execution just grated.
I wanted to like this. Jasper Fforde has been on my list of UK authors to read for a while, but there was always something else on the pile. The metafictional universe that Thursday Next inhabits is a whacky at-right-angles world that is nearly, but not quite the same one that we live in. The Crimean war is still raging and the UK appears to have broken into constituent nations for some reason (I'm not quite sure what's happened to Scotland, ...more
