This was a tough book for me to rate. My initial feeling as I read through the first third of the book was that I disliked it and wouldn't finish it. I would have rated it two stars at that point. The book is almost entirely narrated, so it breaks the modern writing dictate of telling rather than showing. But in the end it proves that when done well, even a book that is almost all exposition can be a pretty decent story. This novel started very roughly for me, due to all the exposition and world-building. I love a well-built world, so for me to complain that it was so much world-building that I began skimming the expository parts... well, one can imagine. This isn't because it's not an interesting world, because it very much is. It was just very heavy on the descriptions of the world and the history of the country, and Phedre's education as a courtesan. Add to this that the ...more
