What Members Thought

The opening chapter with Davidson, the misogynistic human soldier who is bent on exploiting the local "creechies" for their labor and their planet's resources, instantly reminded me of some of the nastier elements of James Tiptree's fictional characters. I was very glad that I didn't have to 'live' in Davidson's head for long, as each chapter featured a different character. I was sad for the ending, even knowing how it was going to end, that the Athsheans would be forever changed by their fight

The title implies a heavy focus on ecology - which is definitely present - but this book is more about what, exactly, is "human" and what, exactly, is "sane"? One of the main human characters reminded me a lot of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness (admittedly haven't read that in about 25 years...) - slowly going insane in a strange environment, while thinking himself to be the only one with any self-control.
