What Members Thought

Will Wheaton was the perfect reader & is actually mentioned by his real name in the story. If you don't know who I'm talking about, then don't bother reading the book or this review. I don't think anyone who isn't into video games or a bit of an SF nerd will get much out of this. It's probably best if you grew up in the 80's, too. Those of us who are a bit older (OK, quite a bit. My kids grew up in the 80's.) but somewhat geeky will also love it.

Probably two and a half stars, with a dash of generosity. I might change my mind. Never been so glad to finish a recreational book. Ever.
This will be, as often happens with me, long and a little spoilery, though I have retained most of the spoilers for my blog post. Still, please read at your own risk if you haven't read (or listened to) the book.
First of all, Wil Wheaton. I chose the audiobook largely because of him. I mean, okay, I never cared for Wesley Crusher (okay, I couldn't stand him) ...more

Immediately after finishing this book, I texted my brother how he NEEDED to read this, and will most likely recommend it to friends who love science fiction, video games, and geeky pop culture references. I'm pretty familiar with 80s pop culture but much less so with video games, however, despite all that, I found myself immensely, immensely enjoying this novel. It was a hilarious and fun romp through great characters, unexpected plot twists, and masterful incorporation of all things geeky & 80s

What a ride....

Please do not be discouraged by my 3 stars rating. The older I am, the more picky I have become.
But this book is definitely worth-to-read, not only by those who have had their teenage years in the 80s, but also by the current generation; not only by the geeks who will definitely dig the virtual reality life in OASIS, but also by those who'd never even played any games before, due to this book's fast-paced, fun-all-the-way, fuck-em-all attitude.

Really liked it.
The story is that in the near future, a billionaire child of the 80s dies and leaves his entire fortune, as well as the control keys to an immersive on-line game/universe called the "Oasis"; to the first person who can complete his final game challenge. Of course, there's an evil Comcast-like corporation that wants to win too, so an epic race ensues.

Yup, I think the hype was right on this one. Ready Player One is insanely readable. I loved how the action flowed, and although I didn't have the crazy connection to the characters that I get from some books, I enjoyed myself immensely reading this. A lot of the '80s references were things I wasn't familiar with, but Cline did a great job of explaining things so that I wasn't left in the dark. And although I didn't always agree with Wade's choices, I definitely had fun reading about them. A+ for

A fun read! I really liked all of the 80's references. The random hacker lore was all true and added to the story.
The main character starts out as a nerdy fat kid and totally follows a heroes path to save the day in the end.
This book was interesting and fun to read. The idea of the entire world being obsessed with a video game and an "egg hunt", while the actual world is a terrible dystopia made for a fun story!

A Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory for adults, READY PLAYER ONE was absolutely FUN. While I didn't know most of the early 80's stuff (especially the movies) I definitely knew all the gaming stuff, and the pure adventure and fast paced action going on here was GREAT. This book was recommended to me by quite a few people and I WANT TO THANK THEM ALL.
