The Silmarillion is simply the best of Tolkien, better than LoTR and the Hobbit and Lost Tales. The vast scope of the work - from the creation of the universe, the coming of the Valar to Arda, the awakening of the Elves and their migrations to Valinor, the making of the Silmarils and the destructive lust to possess them that has some much consequence to so many elvish lives throughout the centuries. As far as this die-hard Tolkien fan is concerned, The Silmarillion is the greatest book ever written. I've read the Bible at least 500 times. I think I've read the Silmarillion twice as many times. This is definitely the one book to rule them all.
