Overall a really good book. But it became boring since more than half of the book is about the various animals and plants that he sees under water. It really got boring because of those elaborate descriptions.

He deserves the title - "Grandfather of science fiction".
HOLY MOLY! It came out in 1869 and this novel invented "Electric Submarines". Diving suits and compressed oxygen tanks were not even invented when this novel came out!!

Submarines as we know them didn't exist in 1869. But Jules Verne had an almost eerily prophetic knack for knowing what technology would be used in the future -- and he put it to work in "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea," a slow-moving adventure tale with plenty of proto-steampunk and almost fantastical undersea life.

I really enjoyed this book. The storytelling and imagery is amazing. Then the way Verne explained all the different theories challenged here was amazing. I will admit that I was confused at times trying to make sense of all of it, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'm kinda sad though, because the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because at times it was a bit too descriptive about things like scenery that I would lose my place in the story itself and that got somewhat annoying. Great science-adventure book. Had a good time reading. I can see why, at the moment, it was considered way ahead of its time.

Some books have to be read, this is one of them.
