The Martian Chronicles is Ray Bradbury at the bitterest state of misanthropy. Not at all what was anticipated and not what I would have expected an audience would want in the post-war 1950s coming off the victory over several fascist states. But by the time my father purchased this book and scribbled his name on the inside cover, the book was in its 16th printing in the late 1960s.

my first Bradbury - gotta love his cultural commentary, and that he spreads criticism fairly rather than targeting one or another particular group
As others have said, a real mix of separate little stories that fold into one another, haunting, on a tomb of a planet, an echoing reminder of what has been lost and of what is in the process of being lost.
