I definitely thought the premise behind this book was a great SF concept: the Earth gets wrapped in a membrane which cuts it off from the Sun, satellites, and the stars. As a kid I always shuddered to think of the Sun expanding and consuming the Earth. This book taps into that fear and it propelled me through to the end. Solid contemporary sci-fi. I think it's hard as time moves on for new sci-fi to both hold on to that fantastic feeling of the unknown while still toeing the line of acknowledging the level of reader's average knowledge. When we as a group knew less about the universe and our place in it, writers were able to take more liberties in their craft, which I feel made it easier for them.
