3.5 rounded up because the ideas were so big & beautiful. It truly was a work of art, but it felt both too long & too short. It also never really grabbed me. The characters seemed real enough, but none of them ever really grabbed me & they should have. They were complex & strong enough in so many ways, but I never really cared if they lived or died.

I'm not a scientist but to me, this is a believable and very scary vision of the future. Simply put...one day the stars go out. Don't tell me it couldn't happen.

I would give this five stars on the concept alone--a mind-blowing exploration of the manipulation of time and space, and some of the possible consequences thereof. Throw in some terraforming and accelerated evolution, and this book is really a trip. Fortunately, the writing is very good also, with developed characters and recurring themes of theology and epistemology.
