A very interesting tale that, other than a few minor places, doesn't feel dated despite its age. Character development is very thin, but all other aspects of the story are good. It is meant to focus more on the science of the alien object than anything else.

This book is so well set up that the anticlimactic ending is absolutely shattering. It's possible reading this book as an early teen embittered me toward Clarke. I'm sure Clarke had a good chuckle about his depiction of reality and probably had to be dissuaded from titling the book Gotcha! by publishers who feared it would give away the conclusion.
