Now I will admit that I have read this book before (in fact I am sure there are comments already on file with GR) however this books has to be in my top 5 all time favourite books which means I cannot resist going back to reading it from time to time.

It does not help that the science fiction artist Jim Burns did some excellent renditions of some key scenes from the book which are printed in his book Lightship (which I recently re-read). However what really draws me back to this book time and ti ...more

What will human beings do when a giant cylinder comes spinning rapidly through their solar system? Is it hostile? Is it a dumb object?

This is a story of humans' instinct of curiosity and self-protection. This is also a beautiful description of an exploration into a mobile world and supposedly more intelligent creatures who created it.
