Another case of a novella being turned into a novel (albeit still a short novel) and it not being handled the best, yet this one kind of overcomes it.
Bizarre to read this after reading The Sparrow and thinking it was so incredibly unique, but here we are.

If I might generalize a bit, a lot of science fiction seems to be implicitly or explicitly hostile to religion. This book is one of the few, perhaps the only, science fiction book I've read that actually treats a current day religion with something approaching not just toleration, but outright admiration.

Well, I can't say I enjoyed the read, but it was thought provoking. Very heavy on the philosophical and religious themes. Where it failed for me was in the characterization, it wasn't rich enough for me. I like my characters to be more fleshed out. I had no idea what some of the characters were thinking or why they took the actions they did.
That said, I did hate most of the characters quite deeply for their hypocrisy and hubris and total disrespect for anyone and anything OTHER than themselves. ...more
