This was my first book by Naomi Novik. And wow. It reads like a dark fairy tale with all the horrific violence and subject matter to be expected. But there's also a romance at its center. So much happens in this book, I was glad I listened to the audiobook, because it brought it to life for me. I feel like this book definitely skews towards a horror novel in many ways. There's plenty here to like, particularly in the first half of the novel, since Novik finds a fairytale-esque voice with a Polish influence which might come across as unusual to those of us who grew up in a Western European tradition. Yet it's a feminist tale that doesn't really quite find the feminism, a Beauty and the Beast type fable that doesn't quite hit either the romantic or the dangerous sweet spot as Novik, halfway through the book veers further into a political fantasy style novel she'

This book was okay. I read it because I saw it mentioned on a lot of other fairytale-fantasy type book reviews, but it fell a little flat for me. I love the concept of the woods, but don't know if I love the way it unfolded. Kind of disappointed with the way it ended.
