People say that The Stand is King's definitive work - the monument to his genius as an author, his Magnum Opus. But I can't help comparing it to his other monster of a book, written sometime later - It, - and find it diminishing in its splendour. The quality of writing is top notch, but still does not evoke imagery as vivid and terrifying. The characters have their distinctive voices, but again, not as developed and complex. Slightly longer review: on my blog.
I knew the beginning of the story very well: top secret research facility + oops (I don't think we ever find out what that first oops was – simple butterfingers?) + second oops of unlocked gate + fleeing guard + third oops of inattentive guards = worldwide catastrophe. A monster flu, a mega-flu, an über-flu, resistant to all treatment (or, rather, adaptive to all treatment), spreading with horrifying swiftness – augmented, apparently, by release of the same str ...more

What I read of this I'm rating 2 stars. That was the first 25% I was going to come back and finish this book but I keep looking at it and I think "Yeah, I don't give a fuck, actually" Life is short and I have a lot of other stuff to read.
File it under maybe one day - but I honestly doubt that I'll ever be revisiting King's writing ...more
