Recomendo.

This is a wonderful story of an exceptionally bright girl, Binti, of the Himba tribe of Namibia, who's on her way to the Harvard or Yale of the future - here, it's Oomza University, and Binti is clothed in the traditional garb of her people, including the red clay ochre that defines her as a person. But Binti is not just any ordinary math genius with a godstone in her pocket - no, she is much more than that. For when she encounters the deadly, tentacled Meduse on her first voyage from home, Bint ...more

Binti, winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel, is the story of a young woman who leaves her family--flouting their wishes--to study to become a master harmonizer on another planet. Binti is a young woman at odds with her culture but who loves her family and her home more than anything. The book's central conflict arises directly from from cultural misunderstandings and racism. But Binti finds the courage and resources within herself--and from her culture’s legacy--to put herself bet ...more

Imaginative, beautiful, frightening-- an exceptional young Himba woman leaves her home for a University on another planet, first of her race to do so.

Jellyfish beings, Medusa, kill everyone but her about the ship (and the pilot), in horrible ways-- It's pure luck (and a device she carries, an artifact) that saves her.

As well as does the ritualistic red clay she wears on her shin and her quick mind.

Exceptional work!! Exceptional cover!!

I will read anything this author writes gladly and with great

Okorafor's series of short novels creates an extraterrestrial culture that feels steeped in tradition. The story is an allegory for the treatment of outsiders, racial and cultural differences, and the unique contribution that an indigenous culture makes to matters of war and peace. The title character is well-developed and compelling, immersing us in a fascinating culture. Three short novels make up this Afrofuturist series. ...more

Not what you think.

Wonderful little story about a girl leaving home to attend a "university" on another planet. She is from a Namibian-like tribe on a future-like Earth. Her tribe has incredible mathematical abilities. She doesn't have many friends. Earth is at war with an alien race called "The Meduse." To say more would be to steal wonder form this novella. Worth your time.
