I came into this book after ignoring it for years, but after I finally started reading (prompted by Yun's review), I was swept away by the story. It's more of a classical science fiction story about scientific discoveries and extraterrestrial beings, but what makes it special is the setting of the story inside China, starting with the Cultural Revolution. There are some truly heartbreaking scenes where the Revolutionaries persecute the professors/intellectuals, which affects the remarkable life ...more

I don't usually read much hard sci-fi. Quite honestly I'm more of a Dr. Who kinda girl. I was intimidated at the thought of reading TTBP, but found myself lost in the narrative almost from the start.

The premise of TTBP sounds simple enough. Contact has been made with an alien culture, but the details of said contact are left mostly hidden until the final pages. One of the great things about this book is that, in addition to fantastic science fiction, this book gives a look into Chinese culture. It is the first Chinese sci-fi novel that I have read, as there are so few of them available in English. My interest in Chinese sci-fi has increased dramatically as a result of this novel, and I can't wait to read more from Liu Cixin and other Chinese authors.

Absolutely outstanding, a work of science fiction art. The translation is fantastic, and from the first chapter you are drawn in, trying to connect seemingly random pieces of information and occurrences as the story unfolds.

This was a strange, magical book. Interspersed between descriptions of current events related to alien contact are fascinating descriptions of Chinese historical events. The Chinese perspective on life and culture was so interesting. The science and alien depictions are at times wild, off-the-wall. The characters were engaging and relatable. I really liked the police officer Shi - pragmatic and comical. If I had one criticism (I'd give the book 4.5 stars if possible) it would be that there were ...more
