Like Gethen, all these worlds are populated by humans, but the Gethenians are unique in one important respect--they differentiate sexually only periodically, going into estrus and becoming a man or woman, as we would term it. Mr. Ai, as he is usually called, finds this unsettling, in much the sam

Classic, almost ageless sf, with all of the somewhat drawn-out majesty that this implies. The exploration of gender is intertwined with a wonderful story of two people slowly reaching understanding of each other, and a world being approached by envoys from another planet. Powerful stuff.
