I think this book is a bit overrated. 50 page into the book everything that needed to be said about this story had already been conveyed. I got that there was a fundamentalist Christian dictatorship that had a hang-up on Old Testament handmaids. For the rest of the book nothing much happened and the conclusion was too fussy for my liking. I did not like the film much either.

Atwood insists on categorizing The Handmaid’s Tale as speculative fiction as opposed to science fiction since she feels no technological breakthroughs are needed to make this story a reality. This book is a landmark in feminist dystopian literature and tackles the issue of religious fascism.
