I went into this book not knowing what it was about. I knew that there had been a movie made, but I hadn't seen it.

I was not expecting the story at all. It was an important message told in a clear and interesting way. I feel that it was toned down a bit to reach a larger audience, though. I felt that reaching the larger audience was important, so it being toned down a bit didn't bother me as much as it normally would have.

The Hate U Give definitely one of the most powerful and intense reads I have read this year.

Eye opening and compelling are two of the words I would use to describe this book.

Star is a young black woman who goes to a party one fateful night. On that night her life changed after witnessing her friend getting shot.

She then has to make her way through life being who she is and having to navigate her way of being one Star for some people and another Star for other people.

A very well written debut about #BlackLivesMatter. I loved how the book had such a serious topic, but managed to have both funny and heartwarming moments as well. Also all the second hand characters were vital to the story - with most books I wish that certain characters get cut because they are just another name to remember and are very flat, but I felt all of the characters were needed and enhanced this story. Each and every one of them had a moment that I either laughed or cried about.
