i just could not get into this book. The time and the characters did not interest me. I enjoyed The Guns of August a great deal but this book left me flat.

This is more of anthology than a stand alone book that discusses major events in several of the Western powers in the 25 years before WWI. I thought it was a good introduction to the era, but the essays shift between extremely narrow (50+ pages on the Dreyfus Affair) to extremely broad (e.g. the chapter on The Hague Peace Conferences). Well-written throughout, but not Tuchman's best work.
