Wow, such a well-researched book. I really like the fact she had actually lived like a Victorian to give a first person perspective. I also really liked Ruth Goodman did not try to say all people or all periods were the same. As much as possible she broke it up into early, middle and late Victorian eras and of course rich and poor, but not just rich and poor but lower middle class, working class, middle class etc.

I live in a place that was settled in the Victorian era, and there's always a whiff of nostalgia about for that age, where we could wear bustles and have our boots blacked. I appreciated Goodman's common sense approach here, reminding us that life was terrible for most people in Victorian Britain. Life was very cheap then, I think cheaper than it had been in the past or the future.
