I've read this before but have no memory of the plot, so I thought I'd read it again.

This is the second in the Brother Cadfael Chronicles and the first in the series that I've read.
The year is 1138, and war rages between the forces of King Stephen and those of Empress Maud. At Shrewesbury, where Brother Cadfael is living out his vocation is a Benedictine monk and tending to the gardens and herbarium of Shrewesbury Abbey, King Stephen has given the order to hang a number of men who have been condemned to death as traitors.

I really enjoyed this book. For a mystery it is not bad but Ellis Peters does a wonderful job bringing delightful characters to life. The characters are such that I want to read more not necessarily to solve the mystery but rather to find out what happens to the characters. The history of the time makes a great backdrop. While historical events are used medieval life is only partially shown. It is shown in a more idealized sense rather than a more realistic sense but it does provide for a great
